Matthew Langley’s minimalist paintings are akin to haiku poetry that focuses on simplicity, intensity and directness of expression. Profoundly influenced by his late professor Gene Davis, a prominent figure in the mid-century color field movement, Matthew uses large fields of color as meditations, similar to the Hindu chakras that associate colors with vibrational energy patterns in the subtle (non-physical) body. At a brief glance, the work can appear decidedly simple, but if one allows oneself to get quiet and look within, these paintings become sublime.
