Meet local historian and writer Bill Emerson. While Googling his great grandfather a few years back he discovered that there were some 200 unpublished Civil War letters this soldier sent to a college friend. Bill has transcribed and annotated these letters. The letter-writer was George N. Bliss, who was in 27 battles, wounded several times, captured, saved from death by a member of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s family, and imprisoned at the notorious Libby Prison. Bliss, who survived the war, was a judge for fifty years and awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. He also became friends with many ex-Confederates he encountered, including four men he wounded. Bill will be retelling some of the stories related in these letters. His recently published book about Bliss, “Don’t tell father I have been shot at” will be available for purchase.
