“Our “useful” items have numerous ways in which they are organized and discarded. Things are collated and stacked, piled and flushed, bundled and lined up. Even the forces of nature come into play as our waste and petroleum based creations assimilate into earths’ ecosystems. The gyres of trash in the oceans, the accretion of plastics along the shorelines, these discarded items have transformed landscapes.

From the streets and forests of my daily life I gather discarded items, I collect the left behind objects of daily life – a soda tab, a safety seal, plastic wrappers, broken toys, Genesee beer can, theater tickets, a Wegmans bag, etc. Physically stitching and manipulating these familiar goods, I think of the assemblages as story quilts – each item carrying its perceived history while becoming part of a new whole.

I aim to convey the possibility of change and rebirth with even the lowliest of objects, but also to bring into question the way in which we, as humans, have chosen to live – with often little regard for the consequence and permanence of our waste. We must coexist with what we have made, and find the humor, horror and beauty of it all.” -Aidan Sofia Earle
