James Derek Sapienza and Karrah Teague: An Exhibition of New Paintings
Lumiere Photo
100 College Ave.
Aug 3, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Featuring Brandon Henahan spinning records. Karrah Teague writes of her work:“My paintings emerge from a battle of memory vs. reality. Memories of memories, and future imagined exploits crashing into one another, forming a cacophonous vocabulary of colors and shapes. My process is active and reactive, a visceral exploration of the medium. Through painting I can focus and channel that within me that feels restless and relentless, a therapeutic vomiting of energy. Often I’m working in a haze of planning and hesitation, punctuated by manic bursts of marks on canvas. In the end the piece is often fiction, but it’s all real.” James Derek Sapienza writes of his work:“These nine canvases make up 2017-2018’s Hard Rain. Inspired by today’s political climate, this series reminds us that the threat of a nuclear disaster is higher than it has been in decades. Historical connotations aside, these images are both coldly alien and eerily familiar; they are devoid of life yet evoke organic shapes. Finished in lacquer designed for industrial flooring, their glossy, uneven surfaces are meant to absorb light and reflect the images in front of them, establishing a connection between the canvas and the viewer. Also on display is 2011’s Japan (After Radiation), which was created in response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan. This is the first time it has been shown.”
