Step into Jonathan Monaghan’s surreal world of playful and unsettling forms. A Trace Left by the Future presents prints by Jonathan Monaghan that explore collective anxieties about a technology-driven future through the use of historical references. Using 3D modeling, Monaghan fuses Beaux-Art ornament, consumer electronics, and surveillance devices into fantastical forms that highlight the fragility of our dependence on technology and consumer culture, transforming familiar objects into uncanny hybrids that blur the boundaries between past and future.
This exhibition in the LAB Space includes limited edition prints that the artist developed specifically referencing Rochester, NY’s Gilded Age architecture for the accompanying public art installation Late Capital Pods, which will also be on view this First Friday.
