Image City Photography Gallery is proud to present Black Is Beautiful, an exhibition of fine art portraiture by Rochester photographer and creative director Adam Eaton. Through carefully composed studio portraits, Eaton celebrates Black beauty, identity, and lived experience while inviting viewers to reconsider how art and culture shape what society recognizes as beautiful.
Eaton’s work is guided by four core values: Community, Honesty, Love, and Beauty. Using flash and strobe lighting, he creates portraits that are deliberate, timeless, and emotionally grounded. His photographs honor the people and community who shaped him while encouraging conversations about identity, race, and dignity.
At the center of the exhibition is Eaton’s ongoing portrait series and recently published book, Black Is Beautiful. The project reflects his belief that every person deserves to be seen with care and intention: “You are beautiful. You are worthy of becoming art.”
Each portrait begins with conversation and collaboration. The person in front of Eaton’s camera becomes an active partner in shaping posture, expression, wardrobe, and mood. Eaton then carefully refines color, contrast, and detail while preserving the subject’s individuality and emotional truth.
Light is Eaton’s primary tool for honoring dark skin tones. He shapes it to reveal detail, create depth, and preserve the rich range of tone and texture in melanin skin, allowing each subject to appear radiant and fully present.
“The goal is not transformation,” Eaton explains. “It’s capturing the true essence of the person—the beauty we don’t always realize or recognize.”
By placing Black people at the center of the frame, Eaton challenges narrow conventions of beauty and invites viewers to pause, look more deeply, and recognize the dignity of every subject.
