Evidence by Joshua Rashaad McFadden
Visual Studies Workshop
31 Prince St.
Mar 6, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Evidence marks the hometown debut of internationally recognized artist Joshua Rashaad McFadden. Included in the exhibition and public art project are portraits of Black men and their intimate writings on identify, masculinity, history, race, gender, and sexuality. Inspired in part by Frederick Douglass’ North Star newspaper dating back to 1848, Evidence distributes its own “newspaper” filled with fresh essays and prose examining Black male identity. Writings included are by award-winning playwright Jiréh Holder, actor/singer Dyllón Burnside (Pose), historian K. Anthony Jones, and Thomas Allen Harris (dir. Through a Lens Darkly). All shed light on the multifaceted existence of Black men while exploring issues critical to the past, present, and future. Evidence newspapers will be distributed for free through seven distribution boxes placed in rotating locations around Rochester for the duration of the exhibition through June 27.
