This exhibition showcases a moody, black-and-white take on the mystique of the Northeastern US. There is magic in all of it – you just have to look. There are summits with no trails, towns that no one remembers, and cities so busy you can be anonymous just by walking through a doorway onto the sidewalk. There are places that will not forgive if you underestimate them, and people who welcome you with open arms, a kind act, and a firm directness that feels rude to an outsider.
New York is home, but home is not in the land. It is in the feeling. This is a search to find it through the eye of my dad’s old Canon and a photographic technology that almost got left behind decades ago.
There is something about the senses that can ground a person. I was drawn to film photography for the mental presence, the feel of old analog devices, and the serenity of the darkroom. The pictures in this exhibition have been printed through a purely analog process, from shutter snap to final image.
