S C A R S – A Collaborative Photographic Experience to Mend the Visible and Invisible Scars

Join us for the Opening Reception of SCARS, a powerful, collaborative photographic exhibit that honors both pain and possibility. Through black-and-white images hand embroidered by the artists themselves, SCARS explores the healing journeys of individuals and communities reclaiming land, story, and belonging.

Led by artist-in-residence Paola Macas Betchart, the exhibit features deeply personal work from ten collaborators who reflect on visible and invisible scars, stories of colonization, displacement, renewal, and resilience, all grounded in Gä’skosägo (Rochester).

This evening is more than an art opening. It is a shared ritual of storytelling, remembrance, and reclamation.

Featuring photo collaborators:
Almeta Whitis, Ambar de Santiago, Ayeong Kim (Pamela Adams), Cassandra Bocanegra, Debora McDell Hernandez, Gä’skosägo (Rochester, NY), Iman Abid, Juliana Muniz, Lauren Jimerson, Serena Viktor

Photography & Direction: Paola Macas Betchart

Special Thanks to program director Julina Muniz for her mentorship and photographer Monica Mullen for the aerial photos.

This exhibit is part of the Alchemy of Healing Project, which is funded by Arts Bloom Funds from the City of Rochester and administered by Rochester Latino Theater Company.

There will be a 7PM Q&A with the artists. We will also offer refreshments and a supervised kids’ room with hands-on activities inspired by the exhibit’s themes with Kasim and Jaesic!
