Making an Impact with Bill Finewood
Pittsford Fine Art

Apr 3, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

A native of Newark, New York, Bill currently lives in Ontario, New York. This location provides easy access to friends, family and the arts, as well as the country and scenes he loves to paint including the Lake Ontario shoreline, orchards and farmlands, the Erie Canal, and the Finger Lakes region. Bill finds beauty wherever he looks.

Bill earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from Syracuse University and worked as an illustrator and graphic designer. He taught at Finger Lakes Community College, and more recently, at RIT. He has presented to groups in the Rochester/Finger Lakes area and has exhibited in numerous one-man, group, and international exhibitions. Bill also has been commissioned by numerous commercial clients including Xerox, Mobil, and DuPont.

Bill approaches his work in the way an illustrator thinks. He researches his subject to get all details correct. His work is carefully planned and rendered in a realistic manner. This outlook has consistently enabled him to produce work that meets the needs of those who commission him, as well as his own needs.

During his illustration career, Bill worked three dimensionally. Bill taught this unusual method for many years at RIT, enabling his students to produce work with a unique look and feel. Transitioning from educator to painter, Bill moved in a different direction. He now paints outdoors each day. With each painting, he learns something from the experience.

Bill loves painting landscapes, bird and other animals, and occasional architectural subjects. In a recent commissioned work Bill completed a visual memory for a woman during her childhood years in war-torn 1940s Holland. Bill visually recalled a scene on the St. Lawrence River where a couple were engaged. Another project was the recollection of seeing one’s future home for the first time 44 years ago. These works have been most rewarding by visualizing memories of events past that profoundly impacted people’s lives.

“I’m truly grateful to be a member of Pittsford Fine Art where I show original paintings, drawings and occasionally, older dimensional works,” says Bill. “It is a privilege to be associated with such remarkable artists from the Greater Rochester region.”
