Rochester, NY-based collage artist and designer JT Fitzgerald builds surreal architectures and hallucinatory objects that walk the line between anxiety and excitement. A self-taught artist, he began cutting, pasting and photocopying imagery in 2018. Drawing from punk collage, psychedelic imagery, subculture zines and skate culture, Fitzgerald combs through archive material for rhythmic combinations that create graphic tensions. His work includes designing the postcard and title wall piece for the 2024 RoCo Member’s Show and numerous album covers, show flyers, and merchandise.

Parallel Processing is an exercise in giving digital archives physical form and placing them in new contexts for the present moment. Using found imagery including textbook illustrations, instructional diagrams, archival promotional materials and technical drawings I build monochromatic, rhythmic collages. By matching shapes and textures I create pieces that tread the line between rigidity and playfulness, and embrace ambiguity. When printed on top of each other, the pieces become something new, interacting in unexpected and intentional ways. Through this process, I embrace the abstraction and tensions of the individual images, inviting the viewer to further layer them with their own interpretations.” -JT Fitzgerald
