From the artist:
“This art expresses my passion for bringing beauty into our world, and cultivating a self-love
that radiates outward. I began making beaded embroidery after visiting Ubuhle Women:
Beadwork and the Art of Independence exhibit at the MAG in the last week of my pregnancy.
Beaded pieces are spells; they’re infused with a specific intention/desire.
Their design unfolds spontaneously.
With figurative work, I’ll take or see a photo and immediately know from a gesture or the
lighting (or both) that it needs to be translated into a painting. Inspiration for abstract
paintings comes from color combinations that I develop an obsession with (e.g., decades’
worth of peeling paint layers on a playground swing) and from intuitive linework that
helps me process my thoughts and emotions without the need for words. I’ve heard that
my oil and acrylic paintings sometimes have a watercolor-like quality; as a lifelong
watercolorist, I take that as a compliment.”
