Artist Gianna Stewart’s carefully crafted triptych incorporates PEN America’s list of words and terms being redacted from official government websites into the letters BELONG – which is also one of the words on the list. The erasure and redaction of many of these words directly impact grant applications and programs, especially for small organizations.

Here the words are presented openly, in public space, and in direct opposition to the attempts to scrub them from public discourse. What words stand out to you? What words do you use regularly, or describe your identity?
