Subsector Launch 1
subsector
173 State St., Ground Floor
Sep 5, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Subsector is a furniture showroom and exhibition space in the heart of Rochester’s historic district downtown. Industrial contractor John Dugan embarks upon a new creative project focusing on industrial furniture design alongside art programming that investigates the relationship between Industrial Design and Fine Art. The space is a mid-19th century Italianate style building storefront that has been renovated and restored by John and Matt Dugan with the help of Chris Randazzo, Matt Kolacki and many more. John has 40 years of experience as an industrial contractor in the Tri-State area, specializing in steel preparation and coatings and has done the historic restoration of many of the iconic buildings in downtown Rochester. He has also worked alongside sculptural artists such as Albert Paley and Wendell Castle doing sandblasting and coatings systems on large-scale public works around Rochester. Last summer John’s company Blastec Industrial completed a full restoration of the Gothic Bridge in Central Park, NYC.
The first show will be a minimalist presentation based on the aesthetic principles of the De Stijl movement where art object and furniture design began to coalesce. The installation will consist of 6 metal chairs produced by John Dugan and sandblasted paintings on steel plate by Matthew Tully Dugan which mimic the materials used to produce the chairs.
An exterior mural by Kelsey Dugan will also be installed on the North side of the building.
