Surfaces is a group exhibition that explores the space between curation, art handling, and art making by artist and curator Matt Vanderlee. It’s the current expression of four years of development building handmade frames, installing other folks’ work, organizing exhibitions, facilitating programming, and designing creative solutions for presenting unique works of art.
Each work in the show is made by an artist working in response to a surface made by Vanderlee. In many cases these are artists who have worked directly with Matt in the past either as collaborator or client. The works explore the space between the wall and the art. It’s about creating surfaces conducive to the artist’s style by constructing an environment unique to their voice and bringing the work together in a way that allows all the parts to speak to a whole. It’s Vanderlee expressing how he would respond to these works if there were no rules or expectations. It’s putting the cart before the horse just to see what might happen. It’s a big ass collage about art and artists.
This project is made possible in part by funds from the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts Aid to Localities program.
