We’re delighted to welcome back Rochester visual artist Joy Payton Daum as our featured artist for October’s First Friday.

Joy Payton Daum is a visual artist based in Rochester, New York, working across gouache, sumi ink, and charcoal on handmade papers. A painting major at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, she studied and exhibited in Rome, Italy through Temple’s study abroad program. She has since exhibited in Philadelphia and Rochester.

Daum has been painting and drawing since early childhood, drawn to it as a source of peace, presence, and joy. Her process is intuitive, allowing shapes and color to lead the way as the painting emerges. The resulting work is often meditative and dreamlike, returning to themes of nature, memory, healing, and the soul.

A traveler, Daum seeks out art wherever she goes, a practice she loves to share with her husband. Her work is informed by her travels, dreams, meditation, and enchantment with existence. She aspires to bring the same playfulness, joy, and freedom to her art as Alexander Calder and Jim Henson.
