This, the first aircraft carrier built by the US Navy was converted from a collier in 1920 and recommissioned in 1922. The 1/96 scale model was constructed by William Emerson of Rochester. The 5′ 8″ replica was scratch built using original plans and photographs. It took five years to complete. The attention to detail and accuracy is amazing. The ship is a testament to the skill and patience that a ship builder must have to in order to complete a project of this magnitude. Mr. Emerson has twelve other ships in various museums around the country. Come and meet Bill and enjoy his work.
